Re:300 RUM 11 Months ago Karma: 0
I've owed lepold varx III 4.5X14X50 aka.(JuNK!) and during the day it was a nice scope, but at dust you lost the crosshairs in the timbers. It cost me game on 3 hunts. I than tryed swarovski and it was night and day diffrence with the 3X12X50 30mm tube first focal plane. get a little to dark in the woods during shooting hrs and crank it up to 4-5 power and hello crosshairs no problem. Than I started looking into a custom rifle. I had a a bunch of work done on my 30-378 from Christensenarms, but this time I put A Schmidt&Bender 3x12x50 military pm lp Gen II reticle on it with neer mfg. scope _base_ and rings. Its a shrap gun. The diffrence between the swarovski and S&B I found was You were able to see a little clearer beyond the woodline at extended ranges more noticable during darker settings. At 10pm I was able to see distinked images past woodline where the Swarovski just seem to stop. I'd go with the S&B both are pricecy. I'd stay away from The new Z 6 _style_ scopes or any second focal plane scopes for that matter. Accuracy is not garunteed threw diffrent magnifications. Hope this helps you out!

How do you like that 338-378?I almost had my gun chamberd it that instead of 30-378,but I heard bad storys about recoil and bullet selection compared to the 30-378.

Don't believe everything you here about recoil, I don't think it is any worse than the 30-378 or the 300 RUM, None of them are bad to me with the brake on, and I only weigh 155 lb @ 5'9" tall. And talk about power, with anything you put through it. I've found A good selection of bullet's for the gun, clear down to 165gn. I just stick with the 225-250 Barnes and Nosler they work on anything I'm going to shoot. I took it deer hunting two year's ago when I first got it, NOT A good idea, It cut A 280lb Mule deer right in two. Elk gun for sure but I really like it...Jerry PS. the good thing is you could just have another new barrel made and you have both caliber's

I have 3 RUMs 2-300RUM and a 338RUM, One is almost factory orig. it shoot 180 gr real well. I shoot 215gr out of my 338RUM but my Christensen carbon tactical and can't get it to shoot with my hand loads. I am leaving thurs for Colorado on thurs. 10-29-09 and need to find a load for my Christesen with 180 gr. Does anyone hand load for thiers? My 338RUM was built by me with a Douglas 30inch barrel and shoots great with less than 2 inchs at 300 yrds.

I have one of all the 30's. The 300 RUM in power level III 180 sorricco has the same velocity and more eneryg(3250/4221#) than any 180gr from any factor 300 weatherby(3250fsp/4197#). It sometimes is splitting hairs, with the velocity and energy though. I agree the 300 weatherby offers a more varity of laods than the 300 RUM. Price is about the same for either. Both can be hard to find in a pinch. The 30-378 weatherby is the fastest and hardest hitting of the 30's. (3360fps/4676) All will kill. My 300 RUM kicks like a mule (no muzzle break) but the 300 weatherby (no muzzle break either) and my 30-378(muzzle break) are very maganeable.
I read someone asking about loads for a 300 wsm in an extreme. I use 168 VDL berger in 300 wsm from the hunting shack in Montana(thehuntingshack.com). I get 3150(average) FPS and the rifle groups them very well out to 400 yards. (I have not tried past that distance)

I own a 300 RUM Sendero and an Accumark 300 Roy.

With 210 Bergers the 300 RUM has a fair bit more speed but of course its burning nearly 10gn more of powder! I get just over 2800 fps with the accumark with 77gn of H4831SC and all shots are touching. Their is no pressure but I loose accuracy if I go up another grain.

Presently I use Hornady cases in the Roy but have 50 new Custom Noslers put aside.

Better Case selection for the Weatherby .

Now if you are talking quick 30 Cals try a 30/378.. My mates accumark clocks 3200fps with th 210 Berger..

Mind you I'm also having a 338 Edge being built on a 700 SPS 300 RUM!
