This was in Nevada area 6, don’t know if I mentioned it but Kaylon shot video of the kill and upon reaching the buck he asked me to say a little something, so I said “Christensen Arms 270 Shortmag did the job baby! 380 yds” we’ll see if it makes it through editing.
This was the 3rd day of a 4 day Nevada hunt, the first morning had the top of the mountains fogged from rain the night before so we headed for lower country and seen a lot of deer but no good bucks and a fair amount of hunters but after all it was opening weekend. This was my second time hunting with Western Wildlife Adventures and Kaylon had been my guide the prior season and on that trip I passed on 3 shooters the first day which I later regretted it, but after taking a 203” buck the week before in Wyoming I felt I could be selective.
But now it was day 2 and after finding 7 bucks in this one basin early that morning I thought today could be the day. We hunted throughout the day and my guide Kaylon Lemon glassed methodically throughout the day and always would find deer and bucks where you might not be expecting them but nothing worth lifting the rifle for.
That night I thought to myself that the table is turned this year because I was unsuccessful in Wyoming and now with this Nevada hunt half over would I be willing to settle for less? The next morning Kaylon decided to try a new area, after glassing from a couple ridges and seeing small bucks we decided it was early enough to try another vantage point. Kaylon being younger and equipped with longer legs than I reached the next bluff before me but I noticed he quickly squatted down, he turned and motioned for be to stay low, as I approached him he whispered there are 3 shooters feeding below. I was confident in Kaylon’s judgment because he knew what I was willing to go after, as I peered through the spotting scope I knew from the height of his G2’s that I wanted him. Kaylon ranged it at 380 down hill. I laid the Christensen 270 WSM on my pack and focused my eye through the Swarovski 4 – 12 TDS and held little low on the front quarters and squeezed off, it was a relief watching him fall and knowing I had christened my new rifle with a worth trophy.
