Just a little curious as to what size a buck most people would hold out for. To me it depends on the type of hunt I'm in. If it's general season deer I'll take a buck that is two point or better. Why? Because if my kids are with me or are waiting for me to come home after four or five days of hunting and there's nothing in the truck...well that just doesn't sit well.
Other than that, it also depends on what I've scouted before the hunt or where I'm hunting.

This is a interesting topic, I have a friend who has killed over a 100 deer in his life time. He has shot deer in the thirty inch range to the 10 inch range. And when he is asked why he shoots the smaller deer he always answers the same way. You cant eat the horns. Now this is one persons opinion on the subject. I fall into the same opinion Hillacious does, it depends on were iam hunting. Our local area if you can find a forked horn you are lucky so its a shooter. If iam in Colorado a forked horn isnt cutting it unless its a 25' or bigger.

a shooter to me is a really good three point or better.i dont see any point in shooting a buck that is smaller.i always think what will he look like next year.there are enough good bucks around that its not that hard to find one if you put in the time.

I think that a shooter is different for everyone. For me size has a lot to do with it,but the hunt also plays into the "shooter" factor. I may harvest a buck that won't go on my wall. If the hunt provides certain challenges or situations that engage my predatory instincts.

I think it depends on the weapon and obviously if you are in a premium unit or not. If i am bow hunting with my son it will be the first 4 point that I think I can get. If I am rifle or muzzleloader hunting with my son it will be a 140 buck. If i am by my self I will always hold out for 170 or better. I have shot several 2 and 3 points and no longer feel like i want to kill them. I am not really a trophy hunter but it does get to me a little when I see a group of men (no kids involved) shooting little 2 points. I have hunted most every state in the west and have never seen an area where you are lucky to only see a little forked horn buck. It all depends on how hard you are looking.
