Sounds like an interesting field test. For me, long range varies from hunt to hunt and is _base_d on numerous factors.
I would have to say, on average, 300 - 400 yards is what I consider long range. I shot a bull elk in Arizona four years ago at 490 yards. That is by far the longest shot I have ever taken at game, probably by 150 yards or more, but again, it was _base_d on the conditions at the time. The target was an elk not an antelope, I could not get any closer, the bull was relaxed and in an open meadow, I had a good rest, I knew the range, I had practiced at that distance, etc., etc. So like I said, for me, long range varies hunt to hunt, shot to shot.
FYI - I was using my Carbon Custom, in 300 Wby, with a Swarovski 3 x 12 PH Scope (TDS reticle) and 180 Grain Accubond hand loads. The first shot hit dead center (probably liver), the bull started to walk after a short trot, second shot missed (oops!), then the bull layed down, and the third shot rolled him over.
