Oh yes, I would not hesitate to shoot an elk at 400 yards. I would be lyin' though if I claimed the same attempt on a whitetail or muley.

O.K. First thing the Elk season in New mexico is looking awesome for this next year. in a one hour drive, i saw over 350 animals and 35 bulls. by the look of the antlers on some of them they should be in the solid 350 or bigger range. but its still early, so my fingers are crossed. But getting back to the muzzle loader question that hit me while i was over there. what caliber do i buy. of course the .50 is the mainstay but how about the .52 caliber. i was told it is becoming the standard that every one is going to.

Great news about the bulls you saw, hope the same holds true in Wyoming this year! I don't have any experience with the 52 cal, but it makes sense to me. I don't know if Ultimate Firearms has a 52 cal (I should probably take a look on their website before I write this) but I think their 50 cal is capable of using up to 250 grains of powder. If it's the same for a 52 cal, HOLD ON! IMO that an elk cannon of a muzzle loader, I like it.

the only reason i asked about the .52 is i got one for dirt cheap from my outfiter. So i wasnt sure if you guys had any experience and youre right 250 grains of powder with that bullet would be an elephant killing bad boy.
