So really what is the best way to prepare for your upcoming hunt? Is it to practice shooting off the bench or off hand???

I would think you want to sight in off the bench but unless you are going to tote a bench around the mountains you need to practice the types of shots you will get on your hunt. Just my view.

Yea I think having shooting sticks or some sort of bi-pod is essential in the hunting field..

Well personally i feel its vital to make sure you are sighted in on the bench. But as far as field shooting goes get a pair of shooting sticks that fit youre _style_ of hunting and you are confident with. I carry my sticks with me for all my rifle hunting doesnt matter if its big game or varments, i shoot off them all the time.

I think we all agree to an extent. I spend a lot of the early summer on the bench, and when I'm totally comfortable with my loads, I get out my shooting sticks and pack and shoot from field positions. Now I know any errant shots in the field are produced by myself and not my rifle. To me, the bench just gives me greater confidence.
