long range hunting 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
i just recently read an article in North American Hunter magazine about long range hunting. The auther asked a group of hunters what range they where comfortable shooting big game at 300yds was the average. He then conducted atest with a rifle of knoen accuracy and their personal favorite rifles none of the hunters with their own rifles could hit a 12 inch circle at 300 yds. No wind known yardage and a good field rest. 1 shooter hit with the rifle of known accuracy when given the correct dope. Just curious what your comfort zone is??? and what setup you will use to do it with

Sounds like an interesting field test. For me, long range varies from hunt to hunt and is _base_d on numerous factors.

I would have to say, on average, 300 - 400 yards is what I consider long range. I shot a bull elk in Arizona four years ago at 490 yards. That is by far the longest shot I have ever taken at game, probably by 150 yards or more, but again, it was _base_d on the conditions at the time. The target was an elk not an antelope, I could not get any closer, the bull was relaxed and in an open meadow, I had a good rest, I knew the range, I had practiced at that distance, etc., etc. So like I said, for me, long range varies hunt to hunt, shot to shot.

FYI - I was using my Carbon Custom, in 300 Wby, with a Swarovski 3 x 12 PH Scope (TDS reticle) and 180 Grain Accubond hand loads. The first shot hit dead center (probably liver), the bull started to walk after a short trot, second shot missed (oops!), then the bull layed down, and the third shot rolled him over.

Hey Guys, If you want to learn how to shoot long roange without doubting your shot go to www.thebestofthewest.net and buy thier 10 hour dvd (HOW TO SHOOT BEYOND BELIF). I did, and the last 3 big game animals that I shot were all over 500 yards with a coyote at 600 yards and a few squirels over 700 yards. But you have to practice at alot different ranges to make sure that your bullet drop is correct with your bullet drop calculatons. It was the best thing that I ever did! Its alot of work, but that buck that thieks he is safe on the next ridge over is'nt!!!!! If you have ant questions let me know I'v been shooting long range for 5 years and live for it!!!
